The idea of things going viral is still relatively new. If you don’t know what going viral means, it’s when people on the internet pass around say a video at an astounding rate. My goal of this blog is to highlight an example of viral marketing at it’s finest and not necessarily to discuss the video itself and how a small group of people can spread a message to convince people to “care” about their goal. A group called invisible children created a 30 minute video and has also targeted celebrities and politicians to help share their message. With amazing persistence they are really striking a chord with the nation.
To give a little bit of background the video Kony 2012 is taking that principle and using it to propel a cause. I’m just going to be honest and say never heard of Joseph Kony until literally 3 days ago, and now a good percentage of the people I am friends with on Facebook has posted the video or have said something in reference to it. Kony 2012 is A thirty-minute film by the nonprofit group Invisible Children, with hopes of raising support for the arrest of Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army. The video has received close to 50 million clicks in about 2 weeks. I’m including a link to the video it you haven’t seen it. and a link to sign a petition t help the cause. Sign it.

After Rush Limbaugh made remarks towards Sandra Fluke calling her things like a “slut” , tweets started flying urging advertisers to quit advertising on his show at current count about 20 have dropped, and some stations have even dropped his show altogether. While Rush did issue an apology many are saying it isn’t enough. Rush Limbaugh has made a career for years off of his abrasiveness comments, it appears that this time it just may have been the final straw. Fluke herself has said that the apology doesn’t change what was said.
Check out this article that analyzes what people were saying on twitter about the incident and lobbying for Fluke.

Pretty soon Google is going to start collecting all your information However i wanted to give every one heads up and point you in a direction where you can make it a lot harder for them to do. Keep in Mind you only have until March first to delete all your past search info out of your Google account. Looking at these changes from a Business stand point and especially from a advertisers stand point this is an awesome way to discover exactly what interests your prospective clients. From what they eat, buy, listen to, and even their health concerns. From a privacy stand point they can tell where we go, where we live and other more personnel info.
How to Delete your Google browser
1. Go to the google homepage and sign into your account. 2. Click the dropdown menu next to your name in the upper-right hand corner of your screen. 3. Click accounts settings 4. Find the “Services section” 5. Under “Services” there is a sub-section that reads “View, enable, disable web history.” Click the link next to it that reads: “Go to Web History.” 6. Click on “Remove all Web History” When you click on “Remove all Web History,” a message appears that says ” Web History is Paused.” What this means is that while Google will continue gathering and storing information about your web history it will make all data anonymous, that is, Google will not associate your Web History information with your online accounts and will therefore be unable to send you customized search results. Google’s ability to gather personalized information about you by assigning data to your Gmail and YouTube accounts will remain “Paused” till you click “Resume.”

A couple of Blogs ago I touched on the new Facebook IPO.Facebook is really a great example of of how important it it to keep up with advertising trends. As the worth of Facebook is based purely on its value for advertising. This month Private trading before going public has pushed the value of the company to over $100 billion. Facebook the company itself and how they operate is also unique in that they how lounges with ” chic” decor a fully stocked bar for happy hour and employees get 21 days vacation a yr.

Recently McDonalds released a commercial that offended a lot of Pitbull owners. The Mcdonalds commercial stated that eating their chicken nuggets was less risky than petting a pitbull. Even though McDonalds issued an apology they have still received a lot of back lash from the ad.
In Some cases ads are meant to raise eye brows, But in many cases it is hard to gauge how the public is going to react until the ad is released. Check out business insiders list of Most offensive ads of 2011.

What is Viral Marketing ? When a marketing message is passed along from person to person at an exceptionally at a fast rate causing it to snow ball very quickly. Creating a viral message can be done accidentally or on purpose. But the goal is to give a message ” Effortless Transfer from person to person”
For instance One marketing group used light weight remote planes disguised as flying people to promote a viral sensation for the movie Chronicle. Likewise many of the companies who invested in commercialism that are running during this weekends Superbowl 2012 are banking their their comical commercial turn viral

The Super bowl is coming up and will air on NBC on Feb 5th , and its not so much that I care about the game, or the teams involved, but more so that I am more so drawn to the commercials. Like a lot of people if I do watch the superbowl, the commercials are the only thing I’m interested in seeing. IN fact approximately 15.7% or around 16 million people who watch do so for the commercials alone.
This year a 30 second spot cost $3.5-4 million ( up from $ 3 million in 2010 ) depending on when during the superbowl they are aired. All of the Superbowl spots have been sold out for months with only a few pre- game show spots left.
For the companies that purchase spots its very complicated to determine the return on their investment as larger more well known companies like Pepsi for instance are going to benefit for much longer time span and even more than a smaller lesser known company. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it in the long run. Part of the appeal of a super bowl commercial isn’t just about airing during the superbowl and being seen by 100+ million people.
Another big plus that leads to a big return is that these commercials are also getting attention on the internet and being talked about online for weeks before and after the superbowl. Commercials can go viral online and multiply the already millions that have seen it. In fact buying one 30o second ad in the superbowl is like buying 250 commercials on any other day which can cost about $9 million, so even though 3.5 + million might seen astronomical for 30 seconds its actually quite the bargain. When you look at the reach and the exposure is involved.

Whether you love them hate them or just don’t care Kris Jenner and her family know a thing or two about using the media to create free advertising and business opportunities. While not everyone can use their popularity to create a snowball of business opportunities you can use some of the same principles to make money online.
Become Familiar. No matter what the business, you have to put yourself out there in order to get clients back in return. This seems like a gimme’ but in reality putting yourself out there means something a little bit differently that is may have 10 years or even 2 years ago, especially in terms of how fast things change online . At minimum you have to have a website, you should (most of the time) also have a facebook, twitter, linked in and Mechant Circle. Also keep in mind there are tons of other sites that let you advertise your business for free. Make sure you are there too. Also keep up with things like Angie’s list where your customers can leave reviews and make recommendations on your business. A big part of social networking is building, and keeping a relationship going
Maintenance. While I don’t necessarily mean going to the Gym or Kris Jenner getting plastic surgery before Kim’s most recent televised wedding, the kind of maintenance I mean is they consistently keep themselves in the public eye with what is going on in their family. Whether you care or not they have made a living out of their everyday lives. From your own personnel business stand point it is important to make sure that not only do you set your business up on these sites, but you must also keep regular maintenance on them as well. Check in, accept requests, make posts and updates about what’s going on with your company, and let your followers and friends know about sales and deals that you have online or in store and make sure that you are providing them with something of value not just a sales pitch.
Know your audience Kardashian’s aren’t just selling perfume or clothing at Sears. They are using their notoriety to sell perfume and clothing at Sears and they are capitalizing on that. Become familiar with your Clientele and what they are interested in Make sure you advertise where they are and make your product or service accessible to them.
